mini eco star for July

mini eco star for July

This month's mini eco star is Zach J of Palmyra, WA. Look at those gorgeous big eyes!  Zach's Mum Sascha says that Zach is such a little sweetie... he will be 9 months in July, and is currently doing the caterpillar to get around, though would love to be crawling and is doing all the knee rocking so should be soon! He is madly in love with his big brother Alex and is happy just to be in his presence watching Alex's antics.

Zach hasn't any teeth yet but is alrady wearing his amber teething necklace in preparation. Although he is a pretty chilled out little guy, Sascha sasy you can tell he has passion and spirit. He loves food and is fed the best organic home made delights, lucky boy ;-) So far Zach hasn't been sick at all, so that says alot we think!

Zach will be feaured on the mini eco website for the next month and will be receiving a special gift from us. If you would like to enter your child to be a mini eco star, have a starring place on our website and receive a gift from our collection simply email us a photo of your little one and tell us about what makes them a star. We love David Fussenegger bamboo blankets - these are truly the softest blanket you will ever feel. Their "Panda" collection contains 40% bamboo fibre. Bamboo has natural anti- bacterial and deodorizing values. It also has high levels of moisture absorption and breathability. Incredibly soft and gentle, the "Panda" collection adds a new dimension to the traditional David Fussenegger range.

In 2 sizes, cot ($139.95) and bassinet ($84.95), they make a wonderful heirloom gift (if you can bear to part with it!).

Bisphenol A Banned in Canada

Bisphenol A Banned in Canada

On April 18th, Canada became the first nation to place BPA on its list of toxic substances deemed hazardous to human health. It had previously declared BPA to be "dangerous" but has now taken the extra step of actually banning it.

BPA is a synthetic chemical used in the production of polycarbonate plastic. Polycarbonate is used in lots of different products, from water bottles to conventional baby bottles. It can be recognized by the code number 7 on the base of products. The problem with polycarbonate is that studies by reputable bodies have found that the BPA and phthalates found in it leach out and into the liquid or food contained within, especially when it is heated.

This is a critical health concern because BPA mimics oestrogen and once ingested (especially by babies with their immature and fragile systems) it can affect the endocrine system as well as hormone balances within the body. Phthalates can also mimic hormones. Studies have also linked exposure to these chemicals to damage in developing brains and tissues as well as a heightened risk of cancer later in life (in particular breast and prostate cancers).

What are the alternatives then? We stock a range of BPA and phthalate free baby bottles, sippy cups, plates, bowls, cutlery, food storage containers and even dummies. BPA and phthalate free products are generally made from food grade polypropylene which is considered to be the safest plastic for human use. It has been used since 1954 without any associated health problems.

Our children are so precious – don’t expose them to the possibility of the ingestion of dangerous chemicals. Make sure your all your baby’s feeding related products are BPA and phthalate free!

'til next time
